Meta Platforms (META) has announced plans to build a new $10 billion U.S. data centre in Louisiana.
The new data centre will take up four million square feet of industrial space and will be powered by three natural gas plants that have 2.2 gigawatts of combined capacity.
The data centre is expected to open by 2030.
Meta Platforms is working with utility Entergy Corp. (ETR) to develop the data centre, which will be Meta Platforms largest and use enough energy to power more than one million homes.
Meta Platforms says the new data centre will be much larger than the company’s other sites, and that it will be used to run and train artificial intelligence (A.I.) models and applications.
How many graphics processing units (GPU) the new facility will support is not yet known.
While the newest data centre will be powered by natural gas, Meta executives say they are exploring renewable energy sources such as solar and wind and are also interested in nuclear power.
Meta Platforms is investing heavily in A.I. and has been expanding the number of data centres it uses to process it’s A.I. applications.
The stock of Meta Platforms has risen 77% this year to trade at $613.78 U.S. per share.
