Japan stocks led declines in the region on Friday, tracking steep losses on Wall Street after U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs rattled global markets.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 plummeted 955.35 points, or 2.8%, to 33,780.58, down 20% from its recent peak in July.
Korean markets slipped, after the country’s Constitutional Court upheld the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol, ousting him from office.
The decision now starts a 60-day countdown where a presidential election must be held to select the next president. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has been reinstated as acting president in the mean time.
Australian markets tailed off sharply, sliding into correction territory after declining 11% since its last high in February.
In other markets
Markets in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Shanghai were shuttered for holiday.
In Singapore, the Straits Times Index ditched 116.37 points, or 3%, to 3,825.86
In Korea, the Kospi folded 21.28 points, or 0.9%, to 2,465.42
In New Zealand, the NZX 50 dropped 113.3 points, or 0.9%, to 12,225.28
In Australia, the ASX 200 wilted 191.88 points, or 2.4%, to 7,667.85.
